The Castle Museum considers the monument of Stolpen Castle as its major exhibit. The entire outdoor area is accessible. The tour begins in the most recent parts of the fortress, the modern fortifications with the gatehouse. The granary passage provides a view of the main entrance. Now the free-standing towers dominate the silhouette. Terrific is the distant view from the oldest part of the castle over the surrounding countryside. The view extends over Saxon Switzerland to Bohemia.
Thematic Exhibition Complexes
In the buildings more than thirty rooms can be accessed. More than half of them are museum designed. In the Royal Stables an introductory film provides a short survey of 800 years history of the castle. The Torture Chamber and gruesome dungeons are devoted to medieval legal history. Exhibitions related to issues such as “The Bishop’s Residence” and “Stolpen Palace”, “Natural Monument Stolpen Basalt” and of course the most famous prisoner of Stolpen, Countess Cosel, are the focus of the museum exhibitions.
